McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Act
Foothills Regional High School ensures every student experiencing homelessness has access to education, stability, and opportunities for academic success and overall well-being. The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act defines homeless students as lacking a fixed, regular and adequate nighttime residence. This information is to assist you in ensuring that your child receives services for which they are eligible through the Act.
If your family is temporarily living in any of the following situations:
- sharing the house of other persons due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or a similar reason (sometimes referred to as “doubled-up”);
- living in motels, hotels, trailer parks, or camping grounds due to the lack of alternative adequate accommodations;
- living in emergency or transitional shelters;
- have a primary nighttime residence that is a public or private place not designed for, or ordinarily used as, a regular sleeping accommodation for human beings;
- living in cars, parks, public spaces, abandoned buildings, substandard housing, bus or train stations, or similar settings; and
- migratory students who qualify as homeless because they are living in any of the above circumstances.
Then, under the McKinney-Vento Act, school-aged children have the right to:
- enroll in school immediately, even if they are missing records and documents normally required for enrollment (i.e., birth certificate, proof of residence, previous school records, or immunization/medical records);
- attend either the site in which their residence is zoned or the site of origin, whichever is in their best interest;
- have access to the same programs and services that are available to all other students;
- Foothills does not provide school bus transportation, transportation assistance for students eligible under the McKinney Vento program would involve the provision of gas cards for fuel expenses. If transportation to a physical Foothills location is not possible, a student may always elect to attend the Foothills Virtual site.
